Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and one of the most researched ingredients in skincare. Also known as ascorbic acid, it plays a key role in brightening the skin, boosting collagen production, and protecting against free radicals caused by pollution and UV rays. A Vitamin C serum helps improve uneven skin tone, reduce visible signs of aging, and restore a healthy, radiant glow. Thanks to its effectiveness, it is often recommended as an essential part of a well-rounded skincare routine.
A Vitamin C serum is best applied in the morning after cleansing and before moisturizer and sunscreen. Pairing it with a high SPF ensures maximum protection against oxidative stress. Vitamin C can be layered with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and barrier-supporting actives like niacinamide. If you also use strong exfoliating acids or retinoids, it’s often best to apply Vitamin C in the morning and reserve the other actives for evening use to reduce irritation. Start with a lower concentration if you are new to Vitamin C and gradually move to higher strengths such as pure ascorbic acid.
Not all vitamin C formulations are the same. Different derivatives offer varying stability and benefits. Here are some of the most effective types:
L-Ascorbic Acid: The purest and most potent form of Vitamin C, known for its strong brightening effects but requiring careful formulation for stability.
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP): A gentler, water-soluble form that converts to L-Ascorbic Acid in the skin, providing antioxidant benefits with lower irritation risk.
Ascorbyl Glucoside: A slow-releasing, stable derivative that brightens the skin gradually, making it ideal for daily use.
In our collection you can find oil-based products with vitamin C derivatives, more suitable for sensitive, such as the Pestle & Mortar Vitamin C 2 Phase Serum, as well as highly potent, water-like serum with 15% pure L-Ascorbic Acid, such as Geek & Gorgeous C-Glow Serum.
